Welcome Message from the Head of Department
Welcome to the Department of Computing and thank you for choosing the computing programmes at GCET to pursue your higher education studies.
Computing is one of the most dynamic, diverse and fast growing disciplines. It covers a wide range of applications including games, social media, security, e-health, e-government, e-education, e-commerce, banking, manufacturing, multimedia; just to name a few. The programmes offered by the Computing Department will prepare you to play a key role in driving these applications forward in the Sultanate of Oman, the region and the world. Our partnership with the University of the West of England will ensure that you will be equipped with the state of the art knowledge and skills which will be crowned by an award issued by the University of the West of England.
After graduation, your chance to get a job is very high because:
- The percentage of Omanis working in the computing sector is only about 30% and the rest are expats. With the Omanisation policy, there will be many opportunities for qualified Omanis, like yourself, to work in the computing sector.
- You will be holding a British qualification, which is known for its quality and high standards.
Finally, I wish you all the success in your studies and to have the best experience while staying at GCET.
Dr. Mazhar Hussain Malik
The College currently has “Specialised IT Tools”:
- Advanced computing labs are prepared for students to build and practice their software engineering and forensic skills. A wide range of software tools are available for students including
- Software development kits
- Special purpose tools for domain specific applications
- Creative tools for modelling, design and creative production
The College built a suitable IT Infrastructure:
- General computer labs equipped with modern PCs, printers, Windows, MS Office and other general purpose software.
- Specialised Computer lab equipped with modern PCs and specialised software (Matlab, Simlink, Pspice, C/C++, Solidworks, ArgoUML, jave, and many SW utilities and 3-D Printer).
- Wifi internet access throughout the whole building.
It is worth noting that the UWE Validation Panel, during their formal validation visit to the College, has inspected our laboratories and software and they were very satisfied with adequacy of the laboratory resources to deliver the programme.
